Negotiation of Forces (2022)
Performative installation (modified loom components, woven silk bands dyed with beetroot pigment, weaving bench).

MFA project, Oslo National Academy of the Arts
I have been researching ways to facilitate the reciprocal dialogue that can occur between tools, materials and the body in processes of dyeing and weaving. How does a body adapt to a craft, and how does the craft change in response? I have built a generative weaving installation, a tool that is itself woven as it is activated, made up of a continuing and unbroken silk band. I regulate the tension needed for weaving using my own weight in negotiation with counterweights. The material is dyed using edible beetroot pigment, and my skin absorbs the color alongside the threads. As I advance in weaving, I can continually graft new threads onto the band, so in theory we can go on growing together indefinitely. This ecosystem has been perfectly calibrated to fit my body and circumstance. Together, we make up an enhanced, collaborative being, a product of the exchanging streams that are simmering around us.
